What Are Orthodontic Retainers?

Orthodontic retainers are carefully made dental devices, specially designed to hold the new tooth positions that were set by braces. Their job isn’t just extra; it’s essential for keeping teeth straight after treatment. Without a good retainer, the major investment of time, effort, and money can be wasted because teeth naturally tend to move back to where they were before. This is called orthodontic relapse.

Types of Retainers: The Right Fit for Every Patient

Clear Plastic Retainer (Essix/Vivera)	How They’re Made and What They’re Made Of: These retainers are shaped using heat and pressure from plastic materials like polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) or special polyurethane blends. They are usually 0.75mm to 1.5mm thick and can cover all the teeth or just a section. Different Designs and How They Work: Essix-style retainers can be cut to cover only the top part of the teeth (sectional) so they are hard to see, or they can cover all the teeth for the best hold. Pros and Cons: Essix-style retainers look very good and are often cheaper to make. But, they don’t last as long (usually 1–3 years), can get stained, and don’t let the bite settle naturally. How Small Details Change Things: A wavy cut along the gum line looks better but might not hold as tightly as a straight cut.	When to Use Them: They are a great choice for patients who care most about looks and comfort. They work well to hold all the teeth, but they aren’t the best for cases with big bite problems or when the bite needs to settle on its own, because they cover the chewing surfaces. Why Choose This Type: For slight crowding or when looks are very important, Essix-style retainers are often chosen. They are not suggested when letting the bite settle is important. Comfort, Talking, and Cleaning: They are usually more comfortable and less noticeable than Hawley retainers and don’t affect talking much. But, they can make you produce more spit at first and can bend out of shape or crack if not handled with care. You have to take them out to clean your teeth and the retainer well.
Ремъка на Hawley	How They’re Made and What They’re Made Of: A classic Hawley retainer has a stainless steel wire (usually 0.7mm or 0.8mm thick) set into a plastic base made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The wire rests against the front teeth, and clasps (like Adams clasps or C-clasps) hold onto the back teeth to keep it in place. Different Designs and How They Work: There are different types of clasps. Adams clasps usually give a better hold on the back teeth, but they might feel bigger. The front wire can have adjustable loops or fixed stops to allow for small adjustments after treatment. The plastic base can cover the roof of the mouth or be smaller, which affects comfort and speech. Pros and Cons: Hawley retainers are known for being tough, lasting 5–10 years on average, and are easy to fix. They let the bite settle naturally. But, they don’t look as nice as clear ones and can be easily lost, or patients might forget to wear them. How Small Details Change Things: A stronger front wire (like a double wire) can hold rotated teeth better but might be less comfortable.	When to Use Them: Hawley retainers are often chosen when small tooth adjustments might be needed after treatment or when you want the bite to settle, because the plastic part usually doesn’t cover the chewing surfaces. They are useful for many types of bite problems. Why Choose This Type: For cases like an anterior open bite or deep bite, Hawley retainers with bite plates or extra plastic in the front are often used to control the bite’s height. Comfort, Talking, and Cleaning: Patients might have trouble talking at first because of the part on the roof of their mouth, but this usually goes away in a week or two. Feeling bulky and the taste of the plastic can be issues at first. Cleaning is usually easy because the retainer can be taken out for brushing and flossing.

Using a Fully Digital Process

Today’s process for making retainers mostly uses a fully digital system. It starts with an intraoral scan, which uses a digital model instead of a traditional mold. These digital models are then used to design the retainer on a computer, which allows for a perfect custom fit. Finally, the retainers are made using modern 3D printing. This all-digital process greatly lowers the chance of mistakes, speeds up the delivery time, and makes it easy for clinics and our lab to work together from anywhere.

3D Printing We Use

We use several types of 3D printing to make retainers:

New photopolymers are always being created to offer better flexibility, strength, and clearness, fixing the problems of older 3D-printed retainers.

Traditional vs. Digital Methods

The old way of making retainers, with alginate impressions, stone models, and shaping by hand, takes more work and can have mistakes in size because materials can expand or shrink. Digital methods, on the other hand, are much more consistent, allow for quick remakes, and make it easy to produce from anywhere, with digital files saved forever for easy access.

Cleaning a dental retainer:

Brushing retainers every day with a soft brush is a must.
Use a retainer cleaner like Retainer Brite tablets.
Other options include Efferdent for retainers or Polident for retainers.
A soak in castile soap and water works well.
Cleaning retainers with vinegar or baking soda can remove buildup. Even hydrogen peroxide can be used carefully.
