How Our Dental Ceramics Laboratory Works
The dental lab industry is changing in a big way by using the newest technologies. At Istar Dental Lab, we have switched to a completely digital process. We use CAD/CAM systems, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve our speed, accuracy, and the final quality of our ceramic work.
Using CAD/CAM systems and intraoral scanners has completely changed how we work. This connected digital system allows for:
- Faster Delivery Times: We can design and make restorations in days, or even hours. Old methods took weeks. This move from making things in large groups to making them one by one as needed helps us plan our work better and manage our supplies.
- Better Accuracy and Fit: Digital impressions and CAD/CAM making greatly improve how well restorations fit. This has been shown to lower the number of remakes from 7–10% (old way) to just 2–3% (digital way).
- Easier Communication: Cloud-based systems make talking to our lab and clinical partners easy. This improves how we track cases and work together.
While milling is still the main method for many ceramic jobs, 3D printing is quickly becoming more popular, especially for making models, guides, and even for directly making ceramic parts.
- Complex Shapes: 3D printing is great for making complex shapes and custom implant abutments that are hard to make with regular milling.
- Less Waste: 3D printing uses less material than other methods, which helps us be more environmentally friendly.
- New Ceramic 3D Printing: We are actively testing the direct 3D printing of zirconia and other ceramic materials. This promises to reduce extra finishing work and allows for new design ideas.
AI is changing many parts of our lab work, from design to quality checks:
- AI-Helped CAD/CAM Design: We use AI tools in our design software to automatically find edges, separate teeth, and suggest shapes for restorations. This has cut design time by 30–50% and reduced manual changes by 15–20%.
- Automatic Quality and Flaw Checks: AI vision systems check our milled or 3D-printed products in real-time. These systems find tiny flaws, bad fits, and surface problems with great accuracy. This has helped lower our remakes by 40%.
- Predictive Machine Care: AI tools watch our milling machines and 3D printers. They predict when parts might fail and schedule maintenance ahead of time. This has cut unexpected downtime by 25% and made our equipment last 12% longer.
Better Work Scheduling: AI-powered tools help us plan our jobs, assign resources, and set delivery dates. They adjust to new orders and who is available to work. This can make our delivery up to 20% faster.

Advanced Ceramic Materials and Their Uses
Choosing the right ceramic material is key to getting the best clinical results, balancing strength with how good it looks. At Istar Dental Lab, we have a deep knowledge of the properties, uses, pros, and cons of the main ceramic materials used in dental work.
- Properties: Zirconia is very strong (flexural strength of 900–1200 MPa) and tough (fracture toughness of 5–10 MPa·m^0.5), which is great for areas with a lot of chewing pressure. Newer types (4Y, 5Y) look more natural and clear, but are sometimes a little less strong (around 700 MPa).
- Clinical Uses: Back teeth crowns, bridges with multiple teeth (even long ones), implant abutments, and cases where there isn’t much space to work with.
- Advantages: Very strong, safe for the body, and looks good (especially the newer clear types).
- Processing: It’s heated at very high temperatures (1350–1550°C), but new fast-heating methods have made this much quicker.
- Properties: Looks very clear and matches tooth color well, a lot like natural enamel. It has a strength of 350–500 MPa.
- Clinical Uses: Front teeth crowns, veneers, inlays/onlays, and single back teeth crowns in areas without much chewing pressure.
- Advantages: Looks great, bonds very strongly to the tooth, and is gentler on the opposing teeth than regular zirconia.
- Processing: It’s processed in two steps at lower temperatures (usually 850°C).
- Properties: An older material that looks good but is not as strong or tough as newer ceramics.
- Clinical Uses: Mainly for veneers and inlays where you don’t need to remove much of the tooth and chewing force is low.
- Advantages: Looks excellent and very natural.
