Istar zirconia dental laboratory

Zirconia Dental Lab Services: Crowns, Bridges, and Implant Restorations

Full-service manufacturing from a 460-technician, in-house zirconia dental lab. FDA registered, MDR notified, ISO 13485 certified. 2 to 3 working-day lab turnaround on crown and bridge cases, with same-week shipping to the United States and Europe.

Istar Dental Lab is a zirconia dental lab that produces monolithic and layered zirconia restorations in Shenzhen and Huizhou, China, and ships finished cases to dentists, group practices, DSOs, and outsourcing laboratories worldwide. Every zirconia restoration runs through our own CAD, CAM, sintering, ceramics, and QC departments — nothing is sub-contracted to a third-party milling center.

Zirconia dental lab grades: how to choose for your case

Each grade trades flexural strength for translucency, so the right choice is driven by tooth position, opposing dentition, and parafunction history. The table is the shortcut we use in daily production; mechanical ranges follow manufacturer data for widely used blocks such as KATANA Zirconia from Kuraray Noritake and IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime from Ivoclar, cross-checked against Zhang and Lawn's review State of the Art of Different Zirconia Materials.

Grade familyTypical useFlexural strength (manufacturer data)TranslucencyPreferred form
3Y-TZP (high-strength)Posterior single crowns, long-span bridges, implant frameworks, bruxers~1,100 to 1,200 MPaOpaque to moderateMonolithic
4Y-PSZ (balanced)Second premolar to first molar, short-span bridges, screw-retained implant crowns~800 to 1,100 MPaModerate to highMonolithic or multilayer
5Y-PSZ (high-translucency)Anterior single crowns, veneers, cosmetic cases with low occlusal load~550 to 800 MPaHighMultilayer, often layered with ceramic incisally

Send us the tooth number, opposing dentition, and any parafunction note, and we'll propose a grade and construction before you lock the material in the Rx. Material changes after design approval are made only with written confirmation, under the same written-approval policy we apply to every case.

Inside a zirconia dental lab: our nine-step workflow

A single zirconia case moves through nine controlled steps inside our own facility. We work the entire chain from the first Rx file to the sealed shipping box, because the alternative — passing a case to an outside milling center — is where most of the quality variance in this industry comes from. Every zirconia dental lab restoration we produce exits the same gate sequence; whether the case is a one-unit crown or a 14-unit screw-retained bridge, the gates between steps remain unchanged.

1440 × 960Case intake and Rx review · Recommended upload size · px

Case intake and Rx review. We read your Rx against the submitted scan or impression. If the margin is unclear, the occlusal clearance is below the manufacturer's minimum, or the opposing arch is missing, production is paused and we message you before any mill time is spent.

1440 × 960CAD design · Recommended upload size · px

CAD design. Our 100-technician design department works in exocad and 3Shape, and we also accept native 3Shape Communicate or Medit Link cases. Standard delivery includes one design plus two free revisions per case; additional rounds are quoted.

1440 × 9603D model printing or stone pour · Recommended upload size · px

3D model printing or stone pour. Digital cases are printed on dental-grade resin printers; physical impressions are poured and sectioned according to the material (VPS, polyether, polysulfide).

1440 × 960CAM milling · Recommended upload size · px

CAM milling. 5-axis mills cut the pre-sintered block to a size that compensates for sintering shrinkage. The compensation value is set per material batch and verified against a reference specimen before production runs.

1440 × 960Sintering · Recommended upload size · px

Sintering. Each case is loaded into a zirconia-dedicated furnace running a locked program for its material. Peak temperatures live in the 1,450 to 1,550 °C range depending on the block, with ramp rate and hold time matched to the manufacturer's technical guide — not interchangeable between brands. Furnace calibration is checked on a scheduled interval and logged per firing.

1440 × 960Finishing: staining, glazing, or ceramic layering · Recommended upload size · px

Finishing: staining, glazing, or ceramic layering. Monolithic cases are stained and glazed or polished; layered cases move to the ceramics bench for porcelain application.

1440 × 960Polishing · Recommended upload size · px

Polishing. Final occlusal and interproximal polish, with glaze or high-shine polish selected based on the Rx (polished for functional surfaces that oppose natural enamel).

1440 × 960Quality control, three passes · Recommended upload size · px

Quality control, three passes. Intake and material verification, in-process checks between stations, and an independent final release before the case is packed.

Packaging and shipment. DHL, FedEx, UPS, or SPIDER (France). Tracking number is sent on dispatch day; a case-tracking contact follows the parcel until delivery.

Quality control at our zirconia dental lab

Quality in a zirconia dental crown is easier to describe than to deliver. We run three dedicated QC gates on every case, and the gate owners are independent of the technicians who make the restoration. Our in-process checks and final release both verify that the case meets the target marginal fit for cement-retained crowns; that fit also depends on the preparation and impression you send, which is why we flag questionable scans at intake before starting production.

Pass 1 — Intake and material verification. Case data is checked for completeness. Material lot, brand, and expiry are confirmed and recorded against the case number. The 25-person QC department scans incoming blocks for cracks, chips, or batch-level color drift.

Pass 2 — In-process checks between stations. Fit on the model is verified after milling and again after sintering. Contact tightness, occlusal clearance, and internal relief are checked with articulating film and, where needed, a digital measurement overlay. Connector dimensions on bridges are compared to the design file before the case moves to ceramics or polishing.

Pass 3 — Final release. A dedicated QC technician who did not build the restoration performs the final release. The release checklist covers margin integrity, interproximal contacts, occlusal pattern, shade match against the Rx, surface finish, and any custom notes you added. If the case fails, it is automatically remade; we only contact you first if the fault is in the submitted scan or impression. No zirconia dental crown leaves this gate on a technician's own judgment.

Every case is tied to a unique order number that records the responsible technician, the equipment used, the material lot, and each QC result. Records are retained for three months by default and longer if your supplier agreement requires it. Photo documentation of the finished restoration is available on request before shipment.

Commercial terms for zirconia dental lab accounts

Pricing is quoted per case so your first invoice doesn't surprise you. The five lines that follow define what is and isn't inside a standard quote.

What a quote includes. CAD design, milling, sintering, finishing, three QC passes, packaging, and the printed Rx label. Returning the restoration to your clinic is included for most European and US routes when the parcel value is above our standard threshold; below that threshold, outbound shipping is quoted separately.

What a quote does not include. Inbound shipping of physical impressions (your side), import duties, customs brokerage, and remote-area surcharges. Payment processing fees are typically on the sender side, converted at the day's exchange rate.

Rush cases. For accounts with up to 10 rush cases per month, our zirconia dental lab does not add a rush surcharge. Beyond that volume, we quote per case so a rush does not quietly cannibalize your standard lead time.

Minimum order. We accept single-case trials. For long-term zirconia dental lab accounts we ask for a monthly lab fee above a modest floor, so international shipping doesn't eat the margin on both sides. Clinic accounts are not asked to meet a minimum beyond the case itself.

Payment and account terms. Bank transfer or PayPal. Established accounts can apply for a 30-day term after a short review. First-time clinic clients typically settle on dispatch.

Remakes. When a zirconia dental lab ships a case with fit issues on the lab side — short margins, open contacts, high occlusion, poor seating, shade miss against the Rx, or esthetic defects the lab should have caught — the remake runs at no charge. Changes you request after approval (new shade, new material, redesign at the clinician's preference) are quoted as new work. Clinical changes such as a re-preparation of the tooth are remade at no charge when the first restoration genuinely failed; otherwise they are treated as a new case.

How to start a case with our zirconia dental lab

New accounts normally begin with a single trial case, so you can judge our fit on a real patient before committing a batch. A downloadable checklist is linked under Contact; the practical sequence runs as follows.

1. Send the scan or ship the impression. For digital cases, email the files or upload through 3Shape Communicate, Medit Link, or your preferred transfer platform. For analog cases, we can arrange an inbound label or you can ship with your own courier and share the tracking number.

2. Submit the Rx. We need the clinician and patient identifiers (patient ID in place of full name is fine), restoration type, tooth numbers, shade, due date, and any custom preferences. If you want us to copy from a previous restoration or a diagnostic wax-up, send the reference STL or a clinical photo.

3. We confirm receipt and flag issues within one business day. If scan quality, bite registration, or opposing arch coverage is insufficient to produce a safe restoration, we message you before design begins. The lab turnaround clock starts when a complete case has been received and any outstanding questions are answered.

4. Review the design. We send a design preview (screenshots or STL) through email or your WhatsApp case group. One design round plus two revisions are included; after approval, we proceed to milling.

5. Production and QC. Standard crown and bridge lab turnaround is 2 to 3 working days once design is approved. The clock excludes weekends, Chinese public holidays, international shipping, and customs. We message when the case leaves our QC department.

6. Shipping and tracking. We ship via DHL, FedEx, UPS, or SPIDER with the tracking number sent on dispatch day. A dedicated coordinator follows the parcel until it is scanned at your address.

File formats we accept

  • Mesh: STL, PLY, OBJ, DCM (3Shape native)

  • CAD design (editable): exocad project files, 3Shape .dcm cases

  • Platforms: 3Shape Communicate, Medit Link, iTero MyAligntech, Trios Share

  • Service modes: full production, CAM-only, or CAD-only (we design, you mill)

What the Rx should contain

Clinician and clinic details, patient identifier, tooth numbers, restoration type, shade (VITA Classical or 3D-Master), material grade preference, due date, bite registration method, and any custom notes on margin style, contact tightness, or occlusal pattern. If a photo helps us match color, send it under daylight-balanced light; studies on illumination-dependent color behavior of monolithic zirconia show how much ambient light can shift what we see on the bench.

Compliance and documentation

Cross-border work means our paperwork matters as much as our milling. This zirconia dental lab holds the registrations and certificates below, and shares documentation under NDA where the authority requires it.

US FDA: Establishment registration and device listing, searchable through the FDA Establishment Registration & Device Listing database

EU MDR: Custom-device notification under Annex XIII (Class IIa)

UK MHRA: Registration for custom-made dental devices

ISO 13485: Quality management system for the manufacture of dental restorations

Documents available per case or per account under NDA: material lot certificate, batch traceability log, biocompatibility report, Declaration for Custom-Made Devices, FDA listing excerpt, ISO 13485 certificate, supplier-questionnaire response.

Frequently asked questions

What is the actual difference between monolithic, multilayer, and hand-layered zirconia?

Monolithic is milled from one uniform block — strongest option, flat but reliable optics, and the default where chip returns matter more than esthetics. Multilayer uses one block with a factory-graded color and translucency gradient from cervical to incisal, so a monolithic full-zirconia crown reads less flat on an anterior. Hand-layered means a zirconia coping with ceramic veneering built up by hand on the ceramics bench — richest optics, higher chip risk if the occlusion isn't controlled, usually reserved for a high-value single where the patient has signed off on the trade-off.

Why do we need to specify 3Y, 4Y, or 5Y instead of just "zirconia"?

The number refers to the mol% of yttria used to stabilize the zirconia, and it directly moves the strength-translucency slider. 3Y has the most tetragonal grains, so it fractures well above 1,000 MPa but reads opaque; 5Y has more cubic phase, which lets more light through and drops strength closer to 550 to 800 MPa. Writing "zirconia" on the Rx without a grade forces us to guess, and the guess is usually wrong for anteriors or long spans.

Do we need to send a physical model when we send a scan?

Not for monolithic single units or short bridges — a clean intraoral scan with full-arch, opposing-arch, and bite data is enough. We mail you back a printed model with the restoration if you want it for a seat appointment; let us know in the Rx. Full-contour anterior cases where you want a hand-stained try-in can also start fully digital; we'll print our own model on dental resin.

Can you work from an impression we ship rather than a scan?

Yes. VPS (polyvinyl siloxane) is our preferred impression material because it travels well; polyether and polysulfide are both accepted. Alginate is not suitable for international shipping — it dehydrates and warps during transit, and some customs regimes flag organic impression materials. If you only have alginate, pour and ship a stone model instead.

Who holds the design IP after the case ships?

Original patient data, scans, and anything you upload belong to the practice or lab that sent them. We use the design file only to make the case you ordered and keep electronic records for three months by default so we can quote a quick remake if needed. Longer retention is written into supplier agreements that need it; files can also be deleted on written request.

How do you choose between hand-layered porcelain and multilayer monolithic for an anterior single?

If the patient has heavy occlusion or a known chipping history on neighboring crowns, we route to a multilayer 4Y or 5Y monolithic, finished with micro-staining and glazing. Hand layering goes on cases where the opposing dentition and occlusal clearance give the ceramic room to breathe and the patient has signed off on the extra chipping risk in exchange for the richer optics.

What do you need to color-match a single central incisor?

A VITA shade reading on the prepared tooth and on the adjacent natural tooth, two to three photos under daylight-balanced flash (not phone LED), and ideally a video of the patient smiling to catch value and chroma shifts across lighting. One photo under one light source is not enough for a single central because the same ceramic can read differently under operatory, outdoor, and incandescent light — ask for a shade-matching tray if your clinic can't send photos.

How is a 3-unit zirconia bridge priced differently from three single crowns?

A 3-unit bridge is quoted as one unit plus two abutment units with connector and pontic design added, not as three singles. Framework design time is higher, milling time is higher, and QC checks the connector dimensions against the design file. Expect the per-unit price on a bridge to be slightly higher than a single, with the gap widening on longer spans and screw-retained implant bridges.

Can you do everything in CAD only, and let us mill?

Yes. Design-only service is one of our standard modes, used by labs that have in-house milling but limited CAD bandwidth or no dedicated implant designer. We deliver the exocad or 3Shape output file to your preferred transfer platform; you handle milling, sintering, and finishing on your side.

What is your position on same-day chairside zirconia from a milling unit in the clinic?

Chairside blocks and sintering programs exist and work for simple posterior singles when the operator has the dedicated workflow. Lab-side production becomes the better route when the case needs a multilayer anterior, a bridge, an implant restoration, or an abutment design — anything that benefits from a dedicated designer and a controlled sintering furnace. We can advise which cases fit your chairside setup and which to send out.

Do you work with digital denture or hybrid cases that combine zirconia with other materials?

Yes. Hybrid screw-retained restorations and digital-denture conversions are a routine category. For digital dentures, we work in exocad Full Denture or 3Shape Dental System, print a try-in on dental resin for your patient fitting, and only then release the milled or pressed final.

How do we handle a patient allergy declaration on the Rx?

Nickel-, beryllium-, and palladium-free workflows are standard for zirconia — pure Y-TZP contains none of the three — but when a patient allergy affects the implant abutment, cement choice, or any residual bonding step, flag it in the Rx. We'll propose a compatible abutment material and reply with a short written confirmation before milling.

Can we embed our own order ID or clinic patient ID in the shipping label and the invoice?

Yes. Both the restoration envelope and the invoice can carry your clinic case number, patient internal ID, and purchase order number. Patient full names are not required at any point in our intake, so you can run case-ID-only workflows end-to-end if your privacy framework asks for that.

Ready to send our zirconia dental lab a trial case?

Send one real case through our standard intake and we will design, mill, sinter, finish, QC, and ship it like any other order — a single zirconia dental crown, a full contour dental lab trial on a posterior molar, or a short bridge is a fair starting point. New accounts usually judge us on fit, shade, and occlusion on that first unit, which is also how we would judge an unfamiliar supplier.
