1. Depth of specialisation. A zirconia single crown passes through nine stations here, each with its own team — design, milling, implants, ceramic & metal, removable, finishing, QC, coordination, and shipping. A complex implant case joins a dedicated line; it isn't the same technician learning a new discipline on your patient.

China Dental Lab: The Case for Making Your Restorations in Shenzhen
Istar is a direct-manufacturing china dental lab founded in 2012, with two owned facilities in Shenzhen and Huizhou and around 460 people on staff. In a normal month the floor finishes about 8,000 zirconia single crowns and 2,000 bridge cases; peak months push to 15,000 and 3,000. Our first-pass terminal-inspection rate sits at 95%.
Where your case is actually made
The first thing people ask when they shortlist a china dental lab is whether they're talking to a factory or to a trading desk. A chinese dental laboratory that quotes you may or may not be the one that mills the puck. Every stage of a case runs inside our own buildings:
| # | Step | Where it happens | Who does it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Case intake & review | Shenzhen or Huizhou facility | Case-coordination team (around 40 people) |
| 2 | CAD design | Design department (around 100) | Istar designers |
| 3 | 3D model print | Printing cell | In-house |
| 4 | CAM milling | Milling department (around 70) | In-house |
| 5 | Zirconia processing & sinter | Zirconia line | In-house |
| 6 | Porcelain layering & glaze | Ceramic & metal department (around 70) | In-house |
| 7 | Polishing & finishing | Finishing bench | In-house |
| 8 | QC inspection | Quality department (around 25) | Independent QC |
| 9 | Pack & ship | Shipping desk | In-house |
Cases stay in the building. We don't send work out to a third-party lab, we don't rebrand someone else's milling, and we don't operate as a broker. If you want to see it, you can book an on-site visit at either facility, or we can set up a live video walkthrough of the production floor.
When a case has a problem, every extra layer between you and the person milling the puck adds a day or two to figuring out why. In a direct relationship, your case coordinator walks fifty metres and asks the designer the same morning.

Why China, why now
The historical argument for a Chinese dental laboratory was cost. That isn't the lead reason anymore, and framing a conversation around a quoted unit price buries the five things that actually make the choice work.
2. Scale and equipment utilisation. 8,000 zirconia single crowns a month in a normal season, 15,000 at peak. Sintering ovens and milling cells run on continuous schedules, not on batch triggers, which is what keeps the lab-side turnaround at 2–5 working days for routine zirconia.
3. Material parity. The zirconia blocks and the CAD/CAM systems available to a competent export-oriented Chinese dental laboratory are drawn from the same global catalogue used by laboratories across Europe and North America. Shade, strength and translucency come from the formulation, the firing cycle and the technician — not from the postcode on the shipping label. Our material list includes brands you'll already recognise and can specify by name on the prescription.
4. Digital-native workflow. Export production has to run on scans from day one, so the operating model is built around digital files. A routine single crown moves from a 3Shape, Medit or iTero file to a packaged restoration without ever touching an impression. For aesthetic anterior work, a PLY with colour information gives us more than a plain STL, and the coordinator will ask for one if it isn't in the first upload.
5. Time zones that help when you work with them. Shenzhen is 13 hours ahead of US Eastern. A case uploaded on Monday evening is on a designer's screen Tuesday morning your side. Across a design iteration, that recovers one full working day.
And "why now". Three things have changed in the last few years that make this a 2026 conversation rather than a 2016 one:
01
Door-to-door time for a routine single zirconia crown — production plus express delivery — now sits in the 5–10 working day range for US and Western European destinations. That overlaps the band a lot of local labs operate in.
02
Material and equipment supply has converged. The blocks and the mills in a modern export facility are sourced from the same manufacturers as the labs you buy from closer to home.
03
The regulatory routing is settled. Custom restorations have a documented, auditable path into each major market, with public databases that let a buyer verify the paperwork before placing a case.
Where this arrangement fits: routine digital cases on a predictable weekly volume, with a working week of buffer in the patient's schedule. Where a chair-side lab still wins: same-day emergencies, chair-side troubleshooting mid-appointment, and single anterior cases where you want to sit with the technician.
How much we can actually produce
Here are the numbers at this china dental lab, split by season, so your DSO or group practice can judge whether a surge in volume moves a case to the back of a queue.
| Category | Normal month | Peak month |
|---|---|---|
| Zirconia single crowns | ~8,000 units | ~15,000 units |
| Zirconia bridges | ~2,000 cases | ~3,000 cases |
| All-on-X restorations | ~20 arches | ~40 arches |
| Removable dentures | ~4,000 cases | ~6,500 cases |
A 95% first-pass rate, with the formula
First-pass rate = cases released on the first terminal inspection ÷ all cases submitted in the period.
It does not include cases that failed internally and passed on a second attempt.
First-pass describes what the bench sees before the box ships. Remake describes what you see at try-in. The first number comes from our own data on a clean definition; the second depends on the clinical seating, the prescription and factors on the chair side.
Three gates get a case to the 95%:
01
Incoming review. Prescriptions, scans and physical items are checked for completeness before anyone touches them. If something is missing or contradictory, production pauses and your coordinator writes to you.
02
In-process spot checks. Technicians flag their own stages; the QC team samples through the day.
03
Final inspection. An independent QC inspector — not the technician who made the piece — releases the case. Complex implant, full-arch and anterior aesthetic cases get an extra technical review on top.
Inspection photos or a short report can ship with the order when you ask for them at placement. For zirconia and layered aesthetics, a photo under neutral light answers more questions than a written report alone.
The certifications we hold
Four pieces of paperwork cover the markets we ship to, plus the system that governs how the floor runs:
FDA
1 / 2
Credential
FDA establishment registration + device listing
Covers
United States
UK MHRA
1 / 3
Credential
MHRA registration
Covers
United Kingdom
The materials themselves come with their own paperwork — biocompatibility certificates against ISO 10993 for the brands we stock, and CE paperwork from the block and alloy manufacturers upstream.
To check any of this yourself, the FDA publishes company registrations and device listings in a public database — the starting point is Device Registration and Listing. On our side, the registration packet — certificates and listings covering your market — is handed over named for your audit trail as part of onboarding.
What happens to your patient data
1440 × 960Case traceability and secure production records · Recommended upload size · px
When your practice sends work to a chinese dental laboratory, a case ID is enough for us to work on; patient names stay inside your practice. Scans and transfers run over encrypted channels. On the production floor, each case is referred to by its internal ID, so technicians see design and material data, not patient fields. Files aren't used to train software, aren't published as marketing images, and aren't aggregated into datasets. An NDA, a data processing agreement, or a client-specific confidentiality clause gets signed on request; if your US practice needs a business-associate-style agreement (see HHS sample provisions), mention it at account opening and your coordinator sets it up.
→ Full Privacy Policy — retention periods, deletion requests, access controls, and sub-processor list.
When a case has to come back
If a case fails on something that's ours — margin fit, contact, high occlusion, seating, colour accuracy against the submitted shade, visible defect, poor form — the remake is on our side, prioritised, with the lab fee absorbed. Issues get reported within 24 hours of receipt; the original restoration ships back with the case notes; a remake typically moves in 3–5 working days.
Three situations fall outside the free-remake path and read differently on the invoice: a change of shade or material after approval (treated as a new case), a case the clinic chose to proceed on knowing the impression was compromised, and parts and return freight on implant components, which stay with the ordering side. If a second attempt still misses, the case escalates to the department lead and the next step gets agreed with you before a third version runs.
→ Full Remake, Adjustment & After-Sales Policy — definitions, examples, timeframes, and the escalation ladder.
For labs: white label, written the plain way
A chunk of our business is dental lab outsourcing for other labs — US, UK, Dutch, German, French, Belgian, Austrian, Luxembourgish and Swiss accounts work with this china dental lab in that mode. Dental lab outsourcing done well is close to invisible to your end clinics; it should read on their side as your lab, just with more capacity. The operating points worth putting on paper:
01
Your boxes, your labels, your prescription form, your case numbering. The standard you set is the one we follow. Istar's name stays off the packaging, documentation and communication unless you ask for it.
02
Blind-ship direct to your end clinics is available when you want it. The paperwork lists your lab as the shipper of record for your market.
03
Your end dentists stay yours. That commitment goes in the account agreement, not just a page of policy.
04
Your pricing, your materials library, your implant library and your preferences are segmented to your account. They stay with your account.
Supplier qualification questionnaires, annual audit documents, quality agreements, NDAs and combinations of them all get signed. For labs that want a CAD-only or CAM-only arrangement — you send designs and we mill, or we design against your library and you finish — those modes are set up by request.
Starting with one case
The first case decides whether a working relationship happens, so the opening is kept simple.
01
For a digital case: scans are accepted from 3Shape TRIOS, Medit (i500/i700/i900), iTero (full range), Carestream, CEREC/Sirona and 3D Systems. Send the files to your coordinator through the portal, direct email, 3Shape Communicate, Medit Link, or a shared cloud link, with the prescription detail, the shade, the opposing scan and the bite. STL, PLY, OBJ and DCM are the accepted formats — STL up to about 150 MB per arch, PLY up to 300 MB; the portal splits larger files into chunks on upload.
02
For an impression-based case: ship the impression, bite record and any models to our Shenzhen address. A pre-filled courier label on an Istar account is available on request, or you use yours and share the tracking number so we start watching for it.
A single trial case is accepted so you can evaluate turnaround, fit and finish. A weekly case or a weekly box is the cadence this arrangement works at — international freight on a single one-off unit erodes the economics on both sides. If an impression arrives pulled, torn, or short at the margin, your coordinator calls you before billing and asks for a retake or a re-scan.
When the clock starts
Turnaround is usually quoted as a number. The number is only meaningful once the starting point is defined.
01
The clock starts when your file set is complete, or when you confirm after a question we raised. Uploading a scan with a missing bite doesn't start it.
02
Turnaround figures are given in working days. Weekends in China and Chinese public holidays sit outside the committed time.
03
International transit (DHL, FedEx, UPS, SPIDER in France) is measured separately. Customs clearance is quoted outside the committed turnaround as well.

A few things worth being clear about:
01
A design preview usually comes back the same working day it's ready, so approval sits in your inbox rather than our queue.
02
Chinese New Year and the October national holiday shift schedules every year. Dates and submission cut-offs go out about a month ahead, through your coordinator and in the ordering portal.
03
A rush request moves a case to the front of its lane. The committed arrival date is confirmed before production starts, not after.
04
Design, production and shipment notifications go to the email on your account by default. We post them to a shared channel too for lab-management tools that read them.
FAQ
Do you issue a written report after a formal complaint?+
Yes. Documented complaints come back with a written outcome and the corrective action, so your records show what was done and why.
Can the invoice line carry our clinic case number and PO so AP can reconcile?+
Yes. Add the clinic case number and the PO on the order form; both appear on the invoice line and in the monthly statement, so reconciliation runs against your reference, not an internal lab ID.
What's the right declared value and item name for customs on return shipments?+
Item name: dental restoration or denture; declared value: the lab charge, declared honestly. The shipping desk pre-fills the paperwork; your side confirms it before the courier picks up.
What payment methods and billing frequencies are supported?+
Bank wire and PayPal for payments, in USD or EUR by default. Billing can run per-case, per-batch or on a monthly statement — pick one at account opening and switch any time. New accounts normally start on pre-pay for the first batch; a 30-day account follows once a volume pattern is established.
Can we pause an account for seasonal downtime without losing the arrangement?+
Yes. Tell your coordinator the dates and the account stays open with no fees. Resuming after the pause doesn't require re-onboarding.
Who picks up a shipment problem — a missing part, a wrong label, a damaged box?+
Your coordinator does. The shipping desk and the carrier claims process stay on our side; you get a replacement part or a new ship-out and a tracked claim number without needing to call the courier.
Does a white-label account get a different turnaround than a direct-clinic account?+
No. Both lanes share the same production floor, QC team and schedule. The difference is in packaging, paperwork and who the end client thinks they bought from.
Can we lock a specific designer and QC inspector to our account?+
Yes, on request. The named designer sees your cases and the named QC inspector releases them, so hand style, aesthetic choices and finish stay consistent across orders.
